同社には、勤務時間のうちの20％を好きなことに使うことができる「20％ルール」という社内ルールがあり、ここからも数多くのサービスや機能が生まれている。 早いものではアイデアから約2週間ほどでサービスのデモが出来上がるが、その後のユーザーインターフェイスの改善や、セキュリティのチェックなどに一番時間がかかるという。リリース後のメンテンナンスも、基本的には作ったエンジニアが担当するため、トータルでサービスに関わる期間は長くなる、と南野氏。

「失敗するなら早く失敗するというのがグーグルの方針です。1か月でそのサービスが上手くいくかどうかを見極める材料を集め、短いスパンで次のステップへ行けるかを確認します。長期にわたって開発してきたものが失敗に終わってしまうというのは、作った人にとっても不幸ですから」
