1年前の2月27日にM8.8の大地震がチリで、今年の2月22日にはM6.3の地震がニュージーランドで起き、3月11日は日本でM9.0の巨大地震が起きた。ニューズウィーク誌によると、これら3つの大地震は太平洋プレートが関係している。巨大なプレートの一角で地震が起きると数週間あるいは数ヶ月後に同じプレートの別の一角で大きな地震が起きることが少なくない。3つのエリアは太平洋プレートの3つの角にあたり、まだ何も起きていないのは北東部にある断層、サナンドレアス断層だというのだ。つまり、アメリカ西海岸のサンフランシスコ周辺だ。この地域で最後に起きた大地震は1906年の推定M7.8の地震。既にエネルギーは限界まで溜まっているという。
